Future Banking: MCB empowers young tech talent

The global tech talent shortage is a growing concern, not just for the tech giants, but across all industries. Korn Ferry* projects that by 2030, the world could face a shortfall of over 85 million tech professionals. This gap isn't confined to international markets; Mauritius is also feeling the impact. With industries rapidly shifting towards digital, the demand for tech skills here is quickly outpacing supply.
Mauritius's ICT sector faces a critical challenge: with over 1,300 unfilled jobs, according to the Labour Market Survey*, the skills gap in software development and data analysis threatens to hinder the nation’s 6.5% GDP growth target for 2025*. However, this gap presents a significant opportunity, and MCB is already taking proactive steps to bridge it.
The future of banking is tech-driven
Digital innovation has become a cornerstone of banking and financial services, and if we don’t think tech-first, we risk being left behind. At MCB, we recognise that the future of banking will be powered by data science, cybersecurity, and other tech-driven fields.
Think about it: data science and analytics are omnipresent. They're shaping how we personalise customer experiences, detect fraud, and make smarter decisions. Cybersecurity? More vital than ever, especially with the rise of digital transactions in an increasingly cashless world. Technology is quickly becoming the backbone of everything we do in banking.
That's why MCB is focused on investing in the next generation of tech leaders.
Closing the skills gap: how mcb is leading the charge
At MCB, we don’t wait for talent to come knocking. Instead, we’ve developed a proactive, hands-on approach to nurturing young tech talent through our Beyond Graduate Programme - Tech. More than a traditional graduate programme, this initiative offers an opportunity to be part of something bigger, to grow, and to make a real impact from day one.
As Vichaar Dimlaye, MCB Data Scientist Lead, explains, “The graduate programme is designed to develop young local talent through hands-on Machine Learning and Data Science training, ensuring that our professionals are future-ready and enabling MCB to lead the digital transformation in banking.”
What sets this programme apart is its focus on real-world experience. Nicholas McKenzie, MCB Engineering Chapter Lead, puts it simply: “Our programme focuses on MCB’s specific technologies and the challenges of a regulated financial environment. While universities provide the basics, they don’t fully cover the specific skills and behaviours necessary for our organisation. That’s why it’s critical for us to bridge these gaps as rapidly and effectively as possible.” He continues, “This is achieved through a combination of self-paced learning, team projects, and mentorship, ensuring that candidates are quickly immersed in real-world situations that fast-track their learning.”
Graduate success story: from trainee to software engineer
Take it from one of our success stories: Kartick Toshal, who started as a trainee with Beyond Graduate Programme - Tech and is now a proud Software Engineer in the Engineering BU.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have been part of the Beyond Graduate Programme - Tech,” says Karshik. “We worked directly under the guidance of Nick (Engineering Chapter Lead), gaining invaluable knowledge and hands-on experience in technologies like Angular, Spring Boot, DevOps, and CI/CD. Throughout the programme, we worked on exciting projects, including a parking web app, a timesheet application, and a name-check web app. All of this in just six months! This experience has been instrumental in enhancing my technical skills and professional growth.”
The road ahead: investing in the future
The talent gap is real, but the solutions are here. MCB’s approach to building a tech-driven future is already paying off, and we’re excited to continue growing alongside the brightest minds Mauritius has to offer.
If you’re ready to join a forward-thinking company that’s committed to empowering the next generation of tech talent, MCB might be the place for you. Together, let’s build the future of banking.
